Get Paid by AI Agents: Coinbase Business Adds x402 Checkout Support

AI agents are moving from demos into real commerce. They can buy digital services, trigger transactions, and operate at a scale that traditional checkout flows were not designed around.

Coinbase Business is positioning its checkout product for that next wave. The company says its checkouts now support agent payments through x402, an open standard for machine-to-machine payments. In practice, the same checkout flow that serves human customers can also expose a payment URL built for AI agents.

How the agent payment flow works

Businesses create a checkout through the Coinbase Business Checkouts API. That checkout generates two paths: one URL for human buyers and another for AI agents. When an agent pays, Coinbase captures and settles the transaction.

Funds settle into the merchant’s Coinbase Business account in USDC. Coinbase says those balances can earn 3.35% in rewards, with funds available to withdraw on demand.

Why this matters for digital businesses

For SaaS companies, agencies, API providers, marketplaces, and creators selling digital services, agent-native payments could remove a layer of friction. Instead of building a separate storefront or custom billing system for autonomous buyers, a merchant can use the existing Coinbase checkout infrastructure and add an agent-readable payment route.

The value proposition is straightforward: stablecoin payments, instant settlement, no chargebacks, and a checkout that works for both humans and software buyers.
